Liberty Stone Project

Liberty Stones Still Visible in the Courtyard

Many Liberty Stones can still be found in the courtyard. For many years Liberty Stones were a tradition in Mrs. Gloria Saylor's Art Room at North Clarion. The fourth grade students would make friendship stones in art class. One special friendship stone was saved and placed at the Veterans Memorial Park. Mrs. Saylor called this a "Liberty Stone".

The liberty stone is small impression in clay made by the touch of a thumb and fingers. Unique to each student, it is made to be a symbol of freedom and liberty, and to honor America’s Veterans and military personnel. The Liberty Stones are symbolically placed at the memorial. The Liberty Stone Project is a student's choice, not a required project. I am so pleased to have every year, every student, make a commitment to make a Liberty Stone to honor our veterans.

If you look among the pebbles, you are sure to find one of these small, individual, clay impressions. Should you spot one… pick it up… look at it… feel the impressions in the clay… speculate on its origin… and then put it back in its place of honor.

During the 2014 Veterans Day Assembly, the last Liberty Stones were placed among the bricks and granite of the memorial courtyard.
